According to the Nations newspaper, no
fewer than 40 intending Nigerian travelers have been arrested by operatives of
the Special Fraud Unit (SFU), Lagos, over document fraud.
Their offences ranged from forging of statement of accounts and
faking of travelling documents.
The Nation gathered that their arrest was facilitated by a
written request received from the Consulate General of Italy embassy in Lagos,
asking the SFU to investigate the suspects who allegedly submitted fake and
forged documents to the embassy in their bid to travel out of the country.
The Consulate General had said in the letter that it has now
become common for unscrupulous Nigerians to desire traveling out of the country
through dubious means, adding that in their attempt to manipulate records and
information, many reputable organizations, financial institutions and
government parastatals’ records are falsified and tampered with.
The Commissioner of Police, SFU, Mr. Tunde Ogunsakin, said the
crooks specialized in travel document racketeering, adding that now that they
have been arrested they will be arraigned in court.
